Last week we introduced the hip hop A to Z series with Sesame Street and were pleasantly joined by the Grouch. This week Big Bird is appropriately dropping in to help us go through some of the most important hip hop artists beginning with the letter B. To see last weeks click Hip Hop A to Z – Lesson 1 “A”.

Jacques: B is a pretty good letter in terms of hip hop and is applied to one of the four elements of rap in the B-Boy but less about that and more about the artists. My first choice and purely because I heard it so long ago is Biz Markie with his classic “Just a Friend”.

Big Bird: Good choice, and my first addition to the list would have to be Blackalicious with their famous Alphabet Aerobics.

Jacques: Yeah that Alphabet Aerobics is very fitting for this series, my next choice is a bit of an unsung hero in Brother Ali with an early release titled Forest Whitiker.

Big Bird: He has definitely been an important underground rap artist, on the complete opposite end of the spectrum my pick is Black Eyes Peas but with one of their earlier records “Joints and Jams” before they reached mainstream stardom, not that I can talk.

Brother Ali – Forest Whitiker

Jacques: Aha, going back there, I used to love BEP with their original line up too, had a more real sound back then and loved the Franky Valli reference too. When I think of Busta Rhymes I am spoilt for choice in picking a record. Fire it Up was one of the first rap records I ever bought but I think in retrospect that Gimmie Some Mo’ has always made me go wild, intricate flows, complemented with a creepy beat using sampes from the Psych theme composed by Bernard Herrmann.

Big Bird: Word from the Bird! Talking of intricate flows my next track has to be the man Biggie Smalls himself with

Jacques: Now you have gone and done it Bird, do you know how many big “Bigs” there are. Here are the three most notable who went by the name and all have passed. Being Biggie, Big Pun and Big L (RIP).

Big Bird: Amen

Jacques: It has been a long time since I have listened to those two tracks so my next track is a track about reminiscing in Beanie Sigel’s Remember The Days.

Big Bird: My choice is going even further back with Beastie Boys and Sabotage.

Jacques: Take two of the dopest MC’s ever to grace the microphone with a leftside style and put them together to make a double dope super group. Talib Kweli and Mos Def are… Blackstar!

Big Bird: Another dope group starting with Black are Black Sheep. They are somewhat unknown to the mainstream but speak to any true hip hop head and they will certify their greatness.

Jacques: Big Boi of Outkast may not have had the same solo success as his Atlanta counterpart Andre 3000 who we mentioned last week however he is worth a notable mention and his track Reset from the speakerboxx album really reminded me of his influence on everything Outkast. An unusual somewhat eerie hip hop backing beat.

Big Bird: As we are back on the Big’s it would be rude not to mention Big Daddy Kane. Here he is with “Smooth Operator”.

It is powered by a 200 Horse Power petrol engine and can reach a top speed of 60 mph, an altitude of 8,000 feet, and fly for over 30 minutes on a full tank of fuel. See how it is controlled here:

Click here to view the embedded video.

Each Jetpack costs $75,000, and they are available to pre-order now. However we are yet to see the Jetpack fly outside of a warehouse and up to the 8,000 feet the designers claim it is capable of. Despite this fact, the Martin Jetpack is certainly an impressive piece of technology, and as the design improves and becomes safer, this could well become a fun way to travel in the future.

Surprisingly you don’t need a pilots license to fly the Jetpack, although extensive training is seriously recommended. If you’ve got a spare $75,000 and a death wish you can find out more info here – Martin Jetpack.

A new and interesting scheme has been launched to promote safe sex in the world of clubbing. The plan is simple, Flash a rubber in the queue and you instantly jump to the front! The scheme has been devised to promote safe sex and awareness of sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s) and will hopefully be spreading faster than the diseases themselves. Currently the idea has been rolled out across six clubs in Liverpool and is also landing at Ministry Of Sound in London this Saturday. The scheme is simple and hopefully will be effecitve in putting to death the dreaded STD.

Maybe soon the condom will be featured in Vogue as the hottest new accessory!

What happens to old skateboard decks? Well most probably end up in the bin, and a lucky few may make it into storage in a dusty corner of the garage to be reminisced over when you are old and balding at best. Now however, art collective Haroshi have launched a series of art pieces made using the interesting and unique layer patterns of old skateboard decks.

This is a new take on eco and recycled artwork, the recent Harvest project showcased a selection of the collective’s work from recent years, exemplifying philosophy to embrace sustainability through finding new applications for used possessions.

“There is no single USED skateboard that it is bend or scrunched in the same way. As if it is a personality, skateboard has it`s own character. What I am doing is to focusing on each personality and use it`s element to create my work. So I am trying to show the out shoot of the board beautifully as color of the skateboard looks beautiful when it`s pasted together.”

Google is always looking to take the next step forward on all its projects. The much discussed “20 percent time” that Google employees receive has resulted in a lot of success stories and new advancements and ideas for the company. Jason Holt used his 20 percent project time to create a wraparound view of a modified Google Earth engine, and splashed it across 8 LCD screens in an immersive viewing booth. The result provides a view that bring back memories of the Glass Elevator in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and allows users to seamlessly explore a virtual environment of the Earth, Moon, and Mars. Google has dubbed the experience “Liquid Galaxy.”

Google Liquid Earth was unveiled at TED 2010, and this video from the event showcases Holt running his demo on eight Linux machines and navigating with a six-axis mouse. He also makes use of voice-issued commands to zoom out from San Francisco, California and travel across the globe to check out India’s Taj Mahal. Google continues to push the boundaries of technology and information. Check out another video of Google Liquid Earth, this time filmed at the Google booth at COP 15.
