Res first came to my attention on the 2001 release by Talib Kweli entitled “Quality” and when I heard Golden Boys (her first single) a few years later my initial thoughts were that there was a strong future for this alternative soul artist.

Res a singer songwriter from has had to overcome a lot of music industry politics to continue pursuing her quest as a musician and singer songwriter. After the record label MCA that released her debut “How I Do” went under she moved to a Geffen records in a difficult deal. After finishing her second recording she was forced to shelve her album until a future date. Its now 2010 she is a free agent after leaving Geffen and more importantly I can now inform you that her second album Black.Girls.Rock is availble from her official website for free download. Happy Face.
Go to Res Official Website for more information.
Her style could be considered a hybrid of neo soul and alternative rock and unfortunately in this business of pidgeon holes, record companies and radio stations struggled with categorizing and her identity and subsequently Res’ music has thus far failed to find a good source of radio based promotion. My personal thoughts are that a lot has changed in media since her first album and with the internet rushing towards a web 3.0 status with all the news, blog and social media aggregation that is going on I feel her audience is now far more available. Perhaps this was part of the reason behind her releasing her second album for free download online.
Res – Golden Boys (From her Debut Album)
Res has been very busy over the past few years, between recording the album she has also taken up a photography course, done some advertising as the poster girl for Mark Ecko, worked with NERD, SantiGold, toured with Gnarles Barkey and is planning a collaboration album with Talib Kweli and Graph Nobel of Idle Warship.
Heres a video from the new album, its a soft rock/pop number and very emotive.
