This superb video we found recently summarises wonderfully the first 100 years of visual effects used in movies. Visual effects have given enjoyment to millions of film watchers over the years and now allow directors to create stunning visual works that were only possible in our dreams a few years ago.
Starting from the inspired first users of visual effects in films like The Enchanted Drawing and The Great Train Robbery in the early 1900’s, to the clever use of models and rare animals in fims such as King Kong and Sunrise. It then goes on to document how film makers became ever more creative and developed new techniques to make films like Mary Poppins and of course the iconic Star Wars. Film making became ever more computer based, Tron probably being the truest example of this. Films like Terminator 2 show how the aim of visual effects became to become ever more grand yet unnoticable, and became ever more impressive with films like Jurrasic Park and the King Kong remake. The video also shows us snipets of how todays visual effects creatives make there stunning work with a visual example of how they could age Brad Pitt accordingly in the Benjamin Button film among others.
